Cockroaches are well-known for their risks to public health. The American species is perhaps the most well recognized. Roaches are scavengers, and therfore are seen where there is an abundance of food and food trash. They are most common in restaurants and apartment-style housing where infestations can move from one unit or building to another.

This is a paper nest created by wasps. The queen begins the nest and the workers complete it as they hatch. These nests can become bigger than a basketball. All wasps including, hornets and yellowjackets create paper nests. Most wasps create their nests clinging to a structure, whereas yellowjackets build their nests under ground.
These are wild carpenter ants living in an old log. They could just as easily be tunneling through your house. They are attracted to dark damp areas and as a result, are often seen around kitchens, bathrooms and around other plumbing. Even if you have an infestation, you may see the ants in the house for only a short time in the Spring - or not at all.
These are honey bees swarming around a tree. They may be wild or they may have split from a domesticated hive. Bees may also swarm around a residence and even nest within the walls. When this happens, honey may be seen seeping into a home when the weather is very warm. Many people are allergic to honey bees. Effects of a sting may range from swelling and hives to difficulty breathing and death.
This is a common yellow wasp. Wasps build paper nests by chewing wood material into pulp. Wasps sting, but their stingers are smooth and don't usually become stuck in the skin. People may be allergic to wasps, but this is a different allergy than that of honey bees.
Hornets are a type of wasp and are are usally quite large. Unlike most other wasps, the white- or bald-faced hornet is white and black rather than yellow and black. Hornets are especially attracted to human food. People can be allergic to hornet stings, but this is a different allergy than that of bees.
These very small ants are commonly seen scurrying around sidewalks and foundations. They tunnel in the cracks of pavement or concrete and create the popular little mounds. Pavement ants don't bite and generally avoid poeple, but they can be a nuisance if they become too numerous.
Both bees and wasps sting. Honey bees have barbed stinger that become lodged in the skin. A single honey bee can only sting once. A wasp has a smooth stinger which can be used to sting repeatedly. Poeple may be ellergic to either bess or wasps, although they are different allergies.
This is a stump damaged by carpenter ants - but it could just as easily be the beam of your house. Carpenter ants chew away the wood in your house while they make the tunnels of their colony. You can often see the "saw dust" they leave behind.
